A Brief History of St. John's UCC
The congregation of St. John’s United Church of Christ
was organized in January, 1902 as St. Johanna’s German
Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Reverend Fred Luedeke as its
first pastor. The Congregation soon became
a member of the Evangelical Synod of North America, and then
in 1934 it became a member of the Evangelical & Reformed
Church. The constitution was revised in 1962 in recognition
of the merger that had occurred earlier between the E &
R Churches and the Congregational Christian Churches, thus becoming,
officially, part of the United Church of Christ. A new church
structure was started April 30, 1961, two blocks north of 47th
Street on historic Route 66. The first service was held in the
church’s present location on Palm Sunday in April 15,
1962.
The United Church of Christ
The St. John’s United Church of Christ is a member congregation
of The United Church of Christ, a mainline Protestant denomination
of approximately 1.3 million members worshiping in more than
6,000 churches. Our churches maintain, or are affiliated with,
30 colleges and institutions of higher education, 15 seminaries
and more than 340 health and human service centers in every
state and in Puerto Rico. As part of our UCC membership, the
congregation is also part of the Illinois Conference, and the
Chicago Metropolitan Association.
