A Message from Our Pastor
Let your

--Psalm 33:22
I can
do all things through him (through Christ) who strengthens me.
--Philippians 4:13
This New Year brings hope
and promise and some challenges for the people of St. John’s
United Church of Christ.
In 2005 many people participated
in all the activities of the church, in Adult Bible study and
in Confirmation; in fellowship and in fund-raising; in mission,
outreach and Re-visioning; in worship and in youth ministry
—through all of these things and many more, the church
continues to show vitality.
There is great hope for
our congregation as long as we place that hope and our faith
in God as the Psalmist suggests.
The challenge for us in
this coming year, as I see it, will be look for new ways to
“be church” together. In other words, how can we
continue many of the traditions that have developed over the
104 years that St. John’s has existed, while looking to
develop new ways to reach out to the communities that we serve?
We will have several opportunities
to do this. One of them is the new Community Learning Center
that has happened because of the vision of a young high school
student who enlisted the assistance of many others while working
to get his Eagle Scout Award. Classes in the Learning Center
will be available to people of all ages, and I urge everyone
to take advantage of this facility that is like nothing else
in our community.
Finding new ways to use
our facility and welcoming others will be an additional challenge
for us this year. Finding ways to be open and accountable to
one another in all that we do is also a significant challenge
for us this coming year.
While many good things have
happened during the previous year, it’s important to acknowledge
that we suffered some losses this past year, both as individual
families and as the wider church family. We will continue to
grieve those losses.
The losses that we suffer
together remind us of the need to look for ways to take care
of one another, and to be compassionate with others as Christ
was compassionate with all.
If we can continue to put
our hope in God and in God’s faithfulness—if we
trust in the example and the teaching of Jesus—all things
will be possible for St. John’s United Church of Christ
in this coming year and in the years to come.
Blessings and Peace in this
New Year,
Rev. Bennett McNeal
Pastor
